Q. |
What exactly is the Science Treasure Hunt? |
A. |
It is a summer-long event for children to visit various "science sites" in Central Illinois and learn new things and compete for some really neat prizes. It will begin in early May and end in August. |
Q. |
How does it work? |
A. |
Each child receives his/her own "science passport" that provides the rules and other information. Each science passport has a page with three questions to be answered while visiting there. There are also ten fun-filled "Science Scavenger Hunt" questions to be investigated by each participant. |
Q. |
How many science sites does each child have to visit? |
A. |
Each participant has to visit eight sites. Someone at each site will stamp or initial the page after the participant fills in the answers to the three questions. |
Q. |
Where can we get a passport? |
A. |
About 6500 passports will be printed. Most are distributed through the schools in Peoria, Marshall, Tazewell and Woodford counties during April and May. Once the event begins in May, the passports will be available at each science site. |
Q. |
Does a child have to visit all sixteen sites? |
A. |
No. Only eight sites are required, although some families choose to visit more – because the visits can really be fun.
|
Q. |
After visiting eight or more sites how does a participant enter the contest for the prizes?
|
A. |
Before mailing the entry form each child must also answer the Scavenger Hunt questions. Then, after completing the name and address information on the entry form page of the passport it is mailed to the Peoria
Academy of Science address. |
Q. |
How many winners will there be?
|
A. |
100 winners will be chosen at random from the completed and correct passports. There will be several items per child consisting of books, puzzles, and other neat science stuff. Then, six of the initial 100 winners are randomly selected for additional prizes during the award ceremony. |
Q. |
Who is eligible to win prizes?
|
A. |
Only children who on May 1 are enrolled in first through 8th grade are eligible to receive one of the 100 prizes or one of the additional prizes. However, children of all ages may participate in the Treasure Hunt itself. |
Q. |
What are the top six prizes?
|
A. |
The top prizes are really special such as "science shopping sprees" from a science catalog. The top winner will receive his/her choice of $1,000 towards a personal computer or a $1,000 science shopping spree. Second and third prize winners will receive a $500 and a $250 shopping spree from the catalog, respectively.
|
Q. |
When and where are the prizes awarded?
|
A. |
Each of the 100 winners will be advised by letter by mid-August and invited to the award ceremony. They will pick up their prizes there and participate in the drawing for the additional top six prizes.
